CIfA 2016 Conference: Phase 1 write-up

It can be easy to see change as something that needs to happen at a national, regional or even organisational level. Sometimes we feel we have limited influence over change at these larger scales and consequently feel there is little we can do. One of the areas we wanted to explore in our 2016 workshop at the CIfA Conference was the idea that as individuals there are actions we can do – no matter how small they might seem – that will make a difference. Even if that difference affects just one individual it will still form part of a general shift towards a more equal and diverse community.

The actions discussed in the workshop are provided here with no editing and are intended to give you ideas about actions you might like to do. These comments are in no way an endorsed list of actions which will be taken, either by the Equality and Diversity Group or any other organisation mentioned below. For example, some of the points raised are already happening but are perhaps misunderstood or not widely publicised; in these cases we aim to work to bring clarity to the issue. Some may need a longer timescale than indicated to achieve. However, the comments below do represent the true views of those we spoke to at the workshop, and we felt it was important to show these unedited in the first instance. The Equality and Diversity Group is committed to incorporating your views into our work and we hope to use this list as a basis for doing so and for our work with other organisations.

In the workshop, we asked participants to think about the timescales in which they think some of the actions they suggested would be achievable. Participants were provided with posters entitled ‘Now’, ‘Within a Year’ and ‘Future’ and placed their post-it note actions on these.

Below are these actions, by timescale, for you to browse. Perhaps what is most interesting to note is that most of the actions ended up on the ‘Now’ poster – a realisation perhaps that actions as individuals can often be undertaken much quicker than actions at a larger scale.

Finally, there were many actions that were discussed during the table sessions that our facilitators recorded. These didn’t come with specific ideas of timescales attached and there is some overlap with the actions already listed. We have included them here for the sake of completeness to enable you to explore the ideas they contain.

Proposed Individual Actions

Summary

Below is a summary of the main themes which we picked up from what you said to us at the workshop and on Twitter. This is followed by the full list of points raised during the session.

  • Challenge!
  • Educate – yourself and others
  • Share and speak-out
  • Offer support
  • Be aware and raise awareness
  • Credit those who do well or demonstrate good practice
  • Act NOW – this seems to be the overwhelming mandate of those we spoke to.

During the Phase Two analysis of this data we hope to further expand on these themes and think about how we can move forward with what you would to act on and how we can help with this.

Proposed Equality and Diversity Group Actions

The workshop was the first outing for the newly formed Equality and Diversity Special Interest Group. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity of asking what actions you felt we should be taking on. The responses ranged from actions our group could undertake to actions that perhaps would need to be done by other parts of CIfA.

The actions discussed in the workshop are provided here with no editing. They are intended to show some suggestions we’ve been given for going forward. They are not intended to be a complete and endorsed list of actions but as something we can build on.

Many of the actions in this section are actions for CIfA as well as the Equality and Diversity Group; please remember that this is not a list of actions that CIfA will take but suggestions on areas the Equality and Diversity Group could discuss with CIfA in the future. These comments are in no way an endorsed list of actions which will be taken, either by the Equality and Diversity Group or any other organisation mentioned below.

We’d like to be able to explore as many of these as possible or identify others who can take this forward. However, we can’t do the all at once and we need your help to prioritise them. E-mail us, tweet us, or put a message on our Facebook page to tell us what you think about these.
